A Baccarat Variation: Chermin De Fer
Chermin de fer is a form a baccarat that is played mostly in
Unlike American baccarat, where the casino plays the role of banker, in chermin de fer, the banker role is played by one of the players. This role is rotated to the next player at the end of each round. A player may pass if he or she does not want to be the banker. In order to bet, the person must be participating either as the banker or as a player.
In chermin de fer, the players bet among themselves, not against the house. The house provides the table, cards and a dealer or croupier to oversee the game. The croupier watches to make sure that none of the players are cheating. The casino takes a 5% commission for the winning bets in exchange for providing this service.
There is also a difference in rules regarding the drawing of a third card. In American baccarat, a player must draw on a five. However, in chermin de fer, a player who has a hand of five after the first two cards are dealt may decide whether to stand or draw.
