If you want to win money playing poker, you don’t want to win small pots.  You want to win big pots.  You have to be able to get people to put money into the pots that you will win.  If you only play the hands that you are certain you have a good chance of winning, people will not stay in when they are playing against you.  You will win, but the pot will be small.

On the other hand, if you always put a lot of money into every hand, you will put too much money into the pots you have no hope of winning.  You have to be aggressive about raising the stakes when you have a good hand.  This increases the amount of money that will be in the pot.

In order to be a winner, you must avoid losing strategies.  The losers are most often those who are too passive, and those who are too wild.  The passive loser usually stays in the game too long, calls when he shouldn’t and doesn’t raise when he really ought to.  The player who is too wild keeps playing hands that don’t really have much hope of winning, and even raising them.  He lives for the excitement, but often loses money as a result.
